• Certificate in Preparing to Teach in Lifelong Learning Sector Level 3

The OCR Awards in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector are made up of one unit. This unit is worth 6 credits on the Qualifications Credit Framework and is at either level 3 or level 4 to allow access to candidates with different abilities.

Progression

Candidates who successfully complete these awards can use the completed unit towards the OCR Certificates in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector at either level 3 or level 4. If a candidate completes the level 4 award, the unit can be used towards the OCR L5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

Target audience

The OCR awards in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector give a threshold licence to teach for all new teachers, trainers and tutors delivering publicly funded provision who are entering the profession from September 2007. The Award will be a requirement as laid out in the Dfes paper 'Equipping our Teachers for the Future: Reforming Initial Teacher Training for the Learning and Skills Sector'

• Certificate in Preparing to Teach in Lifelong Learning Sector Level 4

Target audience

• Certificate in Teaching in Lifelong Learning Sector Level 3

The OCR certificates in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) are made up of three mandatory units (worth 18 credits) and at least one optional unit (depending on the credit value of the unit). Candidates must complete at least 24 credits to achieve the certificate. These qualificatons are part of the Qualifications Credit Framework and are at either level 3 or level 4 to allow access to candidates with different abilities.

Progression

Candidates who successfully complete these certificates can use some of the completed units towards the OCR Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, depending on the level of each unit. If a candidate completes the level 4 certificate with all units at level 4, all of these units can be used towards the OCR Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

The Award and Certificate is a requirement as laid out in the DFES paper 'Equipping our teachers for the future: Reforming Initial Teacher Training for the Learning and Skills Sector'.

• Diploma in Teaching in Lifelong Learning Sector Level 5

The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector is for new teachers in a full generic teaching role and is made up of a number of mandatory and optional units, totalling a minimum of 120 credits within the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF).

Target audience

The OCR Diplomas in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector are for all new teachers, trainers and tutors delivering publicly-funded provision who are entering the profession from September 2007, and can be used by candidates who wish to achieve Professional Status within the sector (QTLS).

Aims and Objectives of the Programme

The aims and objectives of this award is to provide the trainee with recognition of their actual work based performance. This is performance of real working activities in their specific working environment.

Contents

The award will cover:

•	Developing plans for assessing competence with candidates.
•	Judging evidence against agreed standards to make assessment decisions
•	Giving candidates feedback and support on your assessment decisions.
•	Contributing to the internal quality assurance process

Activities likely to be involved are:

•	Developing realistic plans for learning and assessment with candidates.
•	Understanding assessment requirements.
•	Planning the assessment process with candidates and the other people involved.
•	Helping candidates to meet the agreed assessment requirements.
•	Reviewing the candidates’ level of competence and identifying what they need to do to be fully competent.
•	Supporting candidates with different needs during your assessment.
•	Using a variety of assessment methods.
•	Making a record of your assessment decisions.
•	Giving candidates feedback on their performance and reviewing their progress throughout the assessment process.
•	Using different types of evidence to give an overall assessment of competence.
•	Working with the other people involved in the assessment process, such as workplace supervisors and the other teachers or trainers.

Learning Methods

Practical and theory based classroom assessment, handouts, exercises and group discussions. Trainees will also have self-directed independent learning.

Assessment

•	Watching candidates perform in the workplace.
•	Asking candidates questions.
•	Taking account of past experiences and achievements.
•	Setting tests.
•	Setting projects and tasks.
•	Arranging simulations.
•	Assessing the candidate’s report of their work.
•	Using evidence from other people, including peers and witnesses.

After the Course.

Candidates who are successful will become a full assessor with a full NVQ level 3 OCR certificate.

Internal Verifier Course

Award in Conducting Internal Quality Assurance of the AssessWhat is the aim of the Award?

The V1 Award is aimed at occupationally competent individuals who wish to verify assessments made by Assessors who are assessing learners working to achieve National Vocational Qualifications. The role of the Internal Verifier is essential as the Internal Verifier ensures the assessment carried out by others meets the agreed national standards and requirements of the Awarding Bodies.

Are there entry requirements?

The V1 Award is designed for those ensuring the quality of assessment activities of Assessors. To undertake the V1 Award you will need to have occupational competence as determined by the sector and have responsibility for at least 2 NVQ Assessors. It is anticipated that individuals accessing the Award should hold the A1 (or its equivalent). An initial assessment will be undertaken before you enter the Award. How will I achieve the Award and how is it delivered?

The Award will be delivered in a number of ways, including workshops and self-study, and is outlined below.

A 2-day workshop which requires some specific pre-work with your learners and sets out the following:

•	an overview of NVQs
•	the role of the internal verifier and definition of verification
•	outline of verification strategy
•	identification of assessor needs and support
•	allocation of learners to assessors
•	undertaking observations of assessor practice
•	feedback skills
•	liaison with external verifier
•	internal quality assurance

You will then have the opportunity to put into practice all you have learned during the following 6-weeks before attending:

A 1-day workshop to review your progress, share experiences, discuss best practice and undertake preparation for your assessment plan.

The plan will be agreed between you and your Assessor who will provide ongoing support throughout the process through on-line and telephone support to ascertain progress with activity in the plan and give support as appropriate.

Finally

A visit, by your Assessor, will take place at a place of work where your assessors and learners are based, to review, perform observation and verify your competence and knowledge of co-ordination of the assessment process. Providing all competences are met the Assessor will apply for certification from the Awarding Body.
